Can These Young Prospects Transform NY into Contenders?

Going into the draft this season, the Islanders have one priority: get the prospect Cubbard back to fill again. This is not to say the Isles don't have prospects; it’s just that we need to more. The Isles want to improve within their roster. My picks are based on the assumption that the Isles are not trading their picks, which may or may not be the case.

First Round

1. New York Islanders – Matthew Schaefer, Defenseman

Matthew is the top prospect in the 2025 NHL Draft for most teams. When you get a chance to draft a defenseman like Matthew Schaefer, you take it. Players like this don't grow on trees. His puck handling is elite, and his ability to deke out opposing forwards and create scoring chances is off the charts. With deadly accurate passing and elite skating, he's a lethal asset.

42. Kristian Epperson - Left Wing

Kristian is a no-nonsense winger who isn't afraid to get his nose dirty. He will stick up for his teammates, works well with stars, and wins puck battles. He has some skill with a good shot and a quick release—potentially a future Anders Lee in their hands.

The rest of the picks will be listed by name only.

Third Round

74. Lasse Boelius - Left Defense

Fourth Round

106. Adam BenĂ¡k - Center

Fifth Round

138. Lirim Amidovski - Center

Sixth Round

170. Daniil Ustinkov - Defense

Seventh Round

202. Elijah Neuenschwander - Goalie
